EASTER BUNNY—WHICH CAME FIRST, THE BUNNY OR THE EGG?

The biggest gift-giver of all is that hirsute, plantigrade, phantasmagorical leporid known as the Easter Bunny.

There’s some version of the Easter Bunny in the traditions of many European cultures. As mentioned earlier (see here), legends may date as far back as the pagan goddess Eostre and her mammalian sidekick who could lay eggs. Rabbits and hares (which are notoriously prolific breeders) have been a symbol of new life since earliest times.
